Saprolite vs Limonite Nickel Ore: Which Is Right for Your Smelter?

Two types of nickel ore, two different processing paths. Understand the differences between saprolite and limonite to optimize your smelter feed — RKEF for NPI or HPAL for battery nickel.

Indonesia enforces a raw nickel ore export ban. Both ore types (saprolite and limonite) are only available for domestic smelters and processing plants.

Saprolite vs Limonite Comparison

Parameter Saprolite Limonite
Ni Content 1.5-2.0% 0.8-1.2%
Fe Content 10-20% 40-50%
SiO₂ 30-45% 2-8%
MgO 15-30% 1-5%
Processing RKEF HPAL
Output NPI, Ferronickel MHP, Battery Nickel
Best For Stainless steel EV batteries

When to Choose Saprolite

Saprolite ore is the primary choice for RKEF smelters producing NPI and ferronickel. With 1.5-2.0% nickel content and lower processing costs, saprolite is the backbone of Indonesia's nickel industry.

RKEF (Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace) smelters require saprolite ore as primary feed.
NPI (Nickel Pig Iron) and ferronickel production for the stainless steel industry.
Lower processing cost compared to HPAL — more efficient initial investment and operational expenses.
High SiO₂ and MgO content suited for pyrometallurgical processing.

When to Choose Limonite

Limonite ore is the primary feed for HPAL plants producing battery-grade nickel. With higher nickel extraction rates, limonite is key to Indonesia's EV battery supply chain.

HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leaching) plants are specifically designed to process limonite ore.
Produces MHP (Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate) and battery-grade nickel sulphate for electric vehicles.
Higher nickel extraction rate — HPAL can extract up to 90%+ of nickel from limonite ore.
High iron content (40-50%) that is difficult for pyrometallurgy is actually optimal for hydrometallurgy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between saprolite and limonite ore?
Saprolite has higher nickel content (1.5-2.0%) with low iron and high SiO₂/MgO, suitable for RKEF smelters. Limonite has lower nickel content (0.8-1.2%) but high iron, suitable for HPAL plants that produce battery-grade nickel.
Can you mix saprolite and limonite in one smelter?
Generally not recommended. RKEF smelters are designed for saprolite (pyrometallurgy), while HPAL is designed for limonite (hydrometallurgy). Mixing both would reduce process efficiency. However, some operations use limited blending to optimize feed grade.
Why does Indonesia ban nickel ore export?
The Indonesian government enforced a nickel ore export ban since 2020 to encourage domestic downstream industry development — smelters, EV battery plants, and high value-added products. This policy aims to increase mineral value addition within the country.
What is the MOQ for each type of nickel ore?
The MOQ for both saprolite and limonite starts at 25,000 MT per shipment. For long-term contracts, we supply up to 500,000 MT/year. Contact us for a specific quotation tailored to your smelter requirements.
