What is Ferronickel?

Ferronickel is a metal alloy made primarily of nickel and iron, with nickel content typically ranging from 20% to 40%. It is widely used in the production of stainless steel and other steel-based products. Ferronickel is produced through a smelting process using nickel ore—particularly laterite nickel ore—which is then refined to achieve the desired nickel content.


Main Uses of Ferronickel

1. Stainless Steel Production
The primary use of ferronickel is as a raw material in the production of stainless steel. It provides a vital source of nickel, which enhances stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and heat. Stainless steel containing nickel is widely used across industries such as automotive, home appliances, and construction.
Nickel also gives stainless steel high mechanical strength, non-magnetic properties, and durability against rust, making it highly valuable in demanding applications.

2. Alloying Element in Special Steel
Beyond stainless steel, ferronickel is also used in manufacturing special alloy steels that require greater resistance to corrosion and oxidation.
